Tacit Knowledge

An organisation’s employees can embody a vast wealth of tacit knowledge that is vital for success, information about processes, techniques and tools that might not be available anywhere else in the organisation but plays a fundamental role in getting the job done and doing it well. This know-how can often exists in isolated pockets within the organisation and can be challenging to capture, share and access.

Project Overview

An organisation’s employees can embody a vast wealth of tacit knowledge that is vital for success, information about processes, techniques and tools that might not be available anywhere else in the organisation but plays a fundamental role in getting the job done and doing it well. This know-how can often exists in isolated pockets within the organisation and can be challenging to capture, share and access. Many organisations already make use of existing content management and productivity tools to try to support capture and sharing tacit knowledge including the use of video based platforms but these often neglect some of the deeper challenges associated with tacit knowledge. We have chosen to look at the problem from the perspective of a high tech manufacturing environment, but challenges such as motivating employees to contribute, how to make connections between an employee with a problem and those with the expertise, the identification of both high quality content and inaccuracies (e.g. driven by the community) and how to find the most relevant and helpful information at the right time are the same in any organisation.

Areas explored

  • Motivating employees to contribute their knowledge
  • Finding the most relevant and helpful information at the right time (point of need)
  • Connecting the individual with the problem and those with the expertise to solve it
  • Identifying both high quality content and inaccuracies
  • Demonstrating value to the organisation
