Safety Critical Training (iWorkSafe)

In order to develop a culture of safety within an organisation, behaviour change in employees must be considered. It has been proven, with the statistics on health and safety incidents at work, that traditional training interventions, classroom-based or online learning, are insufficient in promoting the behaviour change necessary to ensure all employees are working in a safe manner at all times.

Project Overview

iWorkSafe is a platform that provides learners with an engaging and immersive learning experience in relation to health and safety learning. Immersion is achieved through utilizing 360° images of the workplaces where the learner is working. It provides a personalized, scenario-based, and partially gamified experience to the learners in a subtle way to make learning more engaging and more effective. The rationale to choosing these approaches is its potential of increased knowledge retention and real behaviour change in learners versus the alternative which is often face-to-face training through presentations or reading of Operating Procedures.

With iWorkSafe, the learner begins their journey through completing a multi-step and intuitive profile. iWorkSafe then utilizes this information to recommend immersive learning scenarios to a learner. An individual training is called an Experience which is composed of multiple areas. These areas then have multiple 360° scenes of the workplace relating to where the learner works. When the learner enters one of the scenes, they can navigate and also interact with hotspots which can be info points, multiple choice questions and drag and drop activities, among others. The learner is given immediate feedback when they interact with these hotspots.

Another important feature of iWorkSafe is the problem-solving scenario which is based on the learning activities that the learner has previously completed. A specific task is provided to the learner e.g., navigating through a warehouse and dealing with an emergency situation. While navigating through this space, sounds and timers provide a sense of urgency while learners are required to answer questions and make decisions. Once the learner completes this problem-solving, they are shown the report card presenting analysis of how they have performed.

Finally, the learner can perform reflection via iWorkSafe to log how things will or have changed experiencing learning through this medium. Comparison charts are also shown to the learner while they are going through the reflection phase. The upcoming version of iWorkSafe extends the user base to L&D and/or Health & Safety representatives, who can create customised training experiences and use a dashboard to manage the performance of the employees of their organization.
