Moving Towards More Authentic Learning Experiences – Generative AI Personalised Learning Planner

Generative AI is emerging as a new and promising approach to personalised learning planning, complementing decades of work with traditional AI‑powered adaptive learning systems. While adaptive learning has a strong evidence base demonstrating improved engagement and learning outcomes, the use of Generative AI in this space remains at an early stage, with limited research and few market implementations. The report outlines how effective personalised learning relies on three core models; curriculum, content, and learner, and shows how AI systems use these to tailor learning pathways, address knowledge gaps, and provide real‑time feedback. It also highlights the pedagogical foundations of adaptive learning, emphasising the importance of small, well‑structured learning units that reduce cognitive load and support learner‑centred approaches.

The report finds that Generative AI offers unique advantages, particularly its ability to operate effectively with smaller datasets due to pre‑training, and its potential to generate more transparent, contextualised learning recommendations. However, challenges remain, including issues of learner agency, fairness, algorithmic bias, explainability, and data privacy. Market analysis of leading platforms such as Adaptemy, Knewton Alta, and Century shows that while AI is widely used to personalise learning paths, none yet utilise Generative AI, underscoring how early this field still is. Overall, the report concludes that Generative AI could significantly enhance personalised learning planning, but further research is needed to ensure reliability, pedagogical coherence, and ethical implementation.
