The DIALS (Democratic Inclusive & Authentic Assessment for Learning & Sustainability) research has begun with a focus on authentic assessment in schools; how the process can provide an engaging experience for both students and teachers, and can harness wellbeing and a love of learning. The research will also look at what should be measured and how technologies and approaches such as immersive learning and gamification, with effective feedback, can enhance the experience.

This initial piece of research also includes a State of the Market (SotM) review of the technologies currently available in this space in order to identify if gaps exist in the market.

Our literature review revealed that researchers and educators have been looking at authentic ways to effectively assess student learning. So far, the Authentic Assessment frameworks tested in the classroom have demonstrated good results in terms of student engagement and motivation. Yet, there is room for improvement and multiple research papers have highlighted the importance of making students owners of their learning (democratic learning), not only when solving those activities that make part of the assessment process but also through collaborating with teachers and peers to form the growth map that draws their skills development and progress (sustainable learning).

Technology can be a great ally in finding and developing a new authentic learning framework that incorporates the student’s voice in the assessment process and their learning progress mapping.

Stage 1 Schools Survey
