This month’s guest on the Inside Learning Podcast Art Markman draws on multiple research disciplines, including psychology, artificial intelligence, philosophy, neuroscience, learning sciences, linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and education. He provides insights into the functioning of the mind and synthesizes this understanding into practical tools and exercises that develop new skills and achieve personal and learning goals.
Markman is a Professor of Psychology and Marketing at the University of Texas at Austin and Founding Director of the Program in the Human Dimensions of Organizations, he is also the author of multiple books but the focus of our episode today is “Smart Thinking: How to Think Big, Innovate and Outperform Your Rivals”
Mary Kelly, the Academic Dean of Hibernia College, Patron Members of Learnovate also join us in this episode to examine how we design learning for the future.
Art Markman, Ph.D., is Annabel Irion Worsham Centennial Professor of Psychology and Marketing at the University of Texas at Austin. He got his Sc.B. in Cognitive Science from Brown and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Illinois.
He has published over 150 scholarly works on topics in higher-level thinking including the effects of motivation on learning and performance, analogical reasoning, categorization, decision making, and creativity. Art serves as the director of the program in the Human Dimensions of Organizations at the University of Texas.
He spent 9 years as executive editor of the journal Cognitive Science and currently serves as a member of the editorial board of Cognitive Psychology. Art is also co-host of the radio show and podcast Two Guys on Your Head produced by KUT Radio in Austin.
Dr Mary Kelly is Academic Dean of Hibernia College and a member of the College’s Executive Management Team. Dr Kelly has been a driving force in the strategic direction of research initiatives and innovation in academic development since she joined Hibernia College in 2012. She has also served two terms of office on the Teaching Council and was a member of the Council’s Executive Committee.
Dr Kelly’s research interests include practitioner research, early childhood education and teacher education and she is highly skilled in curriculum development, educational technology and teacher training.
