This month we welcome the author of “Education in the Digital Age: How We Get There”, Nadav Zeimer. This episode discusses how students can become co-creators of their own curriculum, where the teacher moves from a sage on a stage to a mentor or a sherpa. Nadav Zeimer is a highly accomplished high school principal and previous small business owner who has a strong background in software engineering. He is currently working in Central Harlem, New York. Nadav’s career explored several industries before finding his true passion as an educator. Not only has Nadav received multiple awards for his exemplary work, but he truly takes pride in bringing positive change and being an extraordinary role model in his community and in the lives of his students.
Nadav began his academic studies at Brandeis University where he obtained his B.A. in Physics. Nadav also spent time abroad to widen his horizons and completed multiple courses in Physical Chemistry at the Université de Rennes I in France. From early on in his career education was always important, which led him to pursue a Master’s degree at the City College of New York. Nadav Zeimer graduated in 2005 with a degree in Secondary Education and Teaching. After gaining several years of teaching experience he decided to go back to school at the Baruch College, City University of New York (CUNY) to obtain his School Building Leader Certification and a certificate in Educational Leadership and Supervision (K-12).
After graduating Nadav worked as a Software Engineer in Palo Alto with DIGITAL (DEC), which was a leading vendor of computer systems including computers and software. When Nadav learned about Great Place to Work(R) Institute and its placement on Fortune Magazine’s ‘100 Best Companies’ list he immediately pursued a job there. As a man of superior determination and perseverance it comes as no surprise that Nadav Zeimer quickly became an integral leader in the IT department where he was crucial in its rapid international growth. At this time in Nadav’s career he saw an opportunity to combine his professional interests by helping a metal sculpture collective become profitable. He developed custom database applications and helped them set up CNC and Plasma automation to mass produce some popular sculptures in order to improve point-of-sale experiences and reduce fulfillment errors.
Once Nadav found his calling in a career in education he never fully gave up his interest and extensive background in digital media. Nadav finds way to incorporate technology and computers into his teaching and began his education career as the manager of the student-run help desks and computer labs. In addition he worked extensively in the IT Services Department for his schools. At the same time he was obtaining his Masters, Nadav started working at George Westinghouse Vocational Technical High School, in Downtown Brooklyn, NY. Here, he served as a physics and technology teacher, special education mathematics teacher, and a robotics coach where he could combine his knowledge of technology and passion for teaching to help students more effectively. Nadav Zeimer had the honor of being involved with several FIRST Robotics Competitions, with his team obtaining first place in the 2006 New York City Regionals.
